Ongoing opposition to Late Night Levies

The BBPA continues to respond to local authority consultations in this area. Areas currently having implemented or approved a Late Night Levy include:

* Newcastle
* Cheltenham
* Islington
* City of London
* Nottingham
* Chelmsford
* Southampton
* Camden

BBPA has recently responded to the Tower Hamlets council consultation regarding a potential late night levy in the borough. BBPA has also responded to Camden council’s review of their licensing policy which contains elements that go beyond appropriate licensing practice, such as health being used as a consideration in licensing decisions. Gloucester City Council is the latest council to announce a consultation on the implementation of a Levy, however Cheltenham council has begun a consultation on revoking their late night levy in favour of a Business Improvement District. The BBPA will be responding to both consultations.

The BBPA and the Campaign for Real Ale have published a [joint report](http://s3.amazonaws.com/bbpa-prod/attachments/documents/uploads/24046/original/Late%20Night%20Levy%20Report%20March%202016.pdf?1460975810) on the impact of the Late Night Levy on the pub sector. The report, ‘supporting a safer night time economy’, urges councils and police to look instead at a partnership approach as a more effective alternative.
